Back in January, we published an article on responsive design, “Responsive Web Design: What It Is and How to Use It.” Responsive design continues to get a lot of attention, but considering how different it is from the “traditional” way of designing websites, it can be a bit overwhelming for those designers who have yet to try it.To that end, we’ve compiled this round-up of resources for creating responsive website designs. Included are tutorials, techniques, articles, tools and more, all geared toward giving you the specific knowledge you need to create your own responsive designs.

The cost of employing a programmer in my area is $50 to $100 an hour. A top end machine is only $3,000, so the cost of buying a truly great computer every three years comes to $0.50/hour. ($3000/(150 wks * 40 hours))
So suppose you can save $2000 every three years by buying cheaper computers, and your average developer is making $60. (These are the most charitable numbers that I can offer the bean-counters. If you only save $1000, or $750, it only strengthens my case.) If those cheaper computers only cost you 10 minutes of productivity a day. (Not at all a stretch, I’m sure that my machine costs me more than that.) then over 3 years the 125 lost hours would add up to a loss of $7500. A loss of 1 minute a day ($750) would give a net gain of $1250, which would hardly offset the cost of poor morale.

Perhaps one of the most talked about websites in the last 12 months has been Nike Better World. It’s been featured in countless Web design galleries, and it still stands as an example of what a great idea and some clever design and development techniques can produce.
In this article, we’ll talk to the team behind Nike Better World to find out how the website was made. We’ll look at exactly how it was put together, and then use similar techniques to create our own parallax scrolling website. Finally, we’ll look at other websites that employ this technique to hopefully inspire you to build on these ideas and create your own variation.

Very interesting testing tool from Springbox. It does allow for quick display checks of ongoing development but does have a few ‘gotchas’ to watch for…
The mobile renderings do not employ any type of scaling so the emulation is not 100%.

This new development can present MARC with the ability to advise our clients to begin to explore fun and creative URLs that could capture some attention as the new domains begin to appear.
The regulatory body that oversees Internet domain names voted on Monday to revamp the domain naming system for websites, allowing them to end with words like “apple” and “orange” instead of suffixes such as “.com” or “.gov.”
“ICANN has opened the Internet’s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today’s decision respects the rights of groups to create new top level domains in any language or script,” the regulatory body said after a board meeting in Singapore.
“We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind,” ICANN President and CEO Rod Beckstrom said in a statement.
ICANN, which stands for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, said it will accept applications for domains with new suffixes from January 12 next year.
Experts say corporations and cities should be among the first applicants to register for new generic top-level domain names gTLDs, resulting in domain names ending in brands like .toyota, .apple, or place names like .newyork.
Today, just 22 gTLDs exist — .com, .org and .info are a few examples — plus about 250 country-level domains like .uk or .cn. After the change, several hundred new gTLDs are expected to come into existence.
“The cost to set up a new top-level domain is $185,000 with a $25,000 annual maintenance fee — steep prices that are designed to dissuade cyber squatters who dominated domain names when the commercial internet took off a few decades ago. There will be a “sunrise” period for companies that own established trademarks where the approval process will be more efficient. “

The tone is what some could consider snarky, but the message is still clear.
My sister found this at the store this weekend. McCormick Spices – a company I would regard as large – had a misspelling of one of their own products on the label. How does the title of the product go into production and onto the shelves misspelled? Even if there are multiple ways (and in this case I dont think there are), if the item is your product you should have a universal way of spelling it.
I then went to their website and found “Tumeric” in a few spots. I know it’s nit-picky but I find it frustrating and it should be embarrassing for them.

Improving Usability with Fitts’ Law
Back in 1954, psychologist Paul Fitts published an article the detailed his theory on human mechanics as it pertained to aimed movement. It was Fitts’ observation that the action of pointing to or tapping an target object could be measured and predicted mathematically.
Fitts stated that the size of the target object along with its distance from the starting location could be directly measured, allowing him to model the ease at which a person could perform the same action with a different target object.

Building Mobile Web Apps the Right Way: Tips and Techniques.
Some people might think that mobile web apps are not as sexy as fully-fledged native apps for iOS or Android. However, the biggest advantage of mobile web apps is that we are able to build them to be platform-independent — we can maintain independence from devices and operating systems.

Some may frown on this concept of automated twitter conversations. I love it. Maybe not in its current form, but the possibilities are huge. The trick will be to figure out how to avoid it becoming such an obvious crappy ploy like e-mail spam or junk snail-mail. Is that even possible? Or, will automated exchanges be detectable and receive the same stigma as the Nigerian Prince e-mails?
Yes and i have better conversations with them than real tweeple. 🙂
