Weāve had conversations like this dozens of times since launching Forecast. They usually comes from people who have an iPhone but arenāt particularly tech savvy, and Iām fairly certain none of them will ever know that Forecast is actually a web app. To them, itās just an app you install from the web.
And theyāre right: if it looks and feels like an app, and lives on your home screen, itās an App. With a capital āA.ā
I feel this is the future of the “app” as it should be IMHO.
The Decline of Apps? Ummm, No – Jeff Hasen.
Interesting take on the native App vs MobileĀ optimizedĀ site argument.
I was thinking about this while sitting on the beach last week and realized that the $$ that apple, android and the app dev/brand makes on the app itself should keep them around for a long while. That is, until they can figure out a way to monetize the mobile web and truly access all the bells and whistles of the device.
Then the question is: Can the mobile web keep up with rapid device advances??? Desktop browsers should answer that question… Ā ouch.
The App is Dead (OK Not Really, But The Browser Is Back).
Interesting article about the shift from the “web” then back to it.
Thanks to Apple’s iOS and Google’s open source Android OS, smartphone and tablet apps have enjoyed a period of astounding success over the past few years. Towards the end of 2010, Wired magazine evenĀ declaredĀ that “the Web is dead.” Who needs browsers when we have apps galore on our smartphones and tablets? Well, fast forward 18 months and things have changed. Browsers are starting to trend up again and some online businesses are turning away from apps.

Building a Mobile App Is Not a Mobile Strategy – Jason Gurwin – Harvard Business Review.
Everyone wants their own mobile application. In the last year, I have heard this consistently. In fact, mobile analytics firm DistimoĀ claims 91 of the top 100 brandsĀ have their own mobile app (up from 51 just 18 months ago).
On the surface this sounds great, right? I can use my big brand name to get people to install my application, and then I can market to them via the palm of their hand whenever I want. If you’re a big brand, I have no doubt you will get a ton of downloads. But downloads are aĀ vanity metric; they don’t measure success.
