From traditional business to social business
When businesses ask for a social media strategy, what they are often really asking for is: Get me a presence on Facebook, Twitter and the like. The mantra of cultural and organisational change that is required in the social web seems to ring hollow. To be fair, it is not their fault. With a traditional business mindset it is hard to see why a presence on Twitter or Facebook is different from the corporate website. After all, these tools can seem to be just another communication channel.

Like-Gating Works, Brands Doubling Up on Facebook | ClickZ.
Like-gating was one of 2011’s earliest trends in Facebook marketing, and Efficient Frontier’s new study suggests the tactic is being successfully employed. The digital marketing company’s report said brands on average will double their number of “likes” year-over-year by October.

Expedia gains 1m Facebook fans with virtual sweepstake
Expedia gains 1m Facebook fans with virtual sweepstake – Facebook.
Good example of how the right idea can work in social…
Fans increased by a whopping 750% across the 6-week lifespan of the game, and apparently the company’s name was mentioned online by up to 30 times more than before the game was launched.
So, what’s to be learned from this? We covered a report earlier today that stated 1 Facebook fan is worth 20 visits to a company’s website. But such focus on ROI kind of misses the whole point of social media – it’s about engagement with the community and that is a long term investment that is hard to put into numbers.

Are You Following a Bot?
Are You Following a Bot? – Magazine – The Atlantic.
Some may frown on this concept of automated twitter conversations. I love it. Maybe not in its current form, but the possibilities are huge. The trick will be to figure out how to avoid it becoming such an obvious crappy ploy like e-mail spam or junk snail-mail. Is that even possible? Or, will automated exchanges be detectable and receive the same stigma as the Nigerian Prince e-mails?

Social Storytelling Boosts Donations for Ronald McDonald House Charities | Social Media Examiner.
Good article about how a social campaign can really make an impact.
In 2010, RMHC launched a “Day of Change” campaign to drive people to donate spare change at their local McDonald’s restaurants. Using social media to spread the word virally, RMHC generated 180,000 interactions on the global Facebook and chapter pages, ultimately increasing online donations in August 130% compared to August 2009 and significantly generating more to their donation boxes.

The end of GroupOn? For me at least.
Beware Booze Bargains, State Says. << Effing EFF!!!! The PA Liquor Control Board is doing what it can to destroy the best thing about GroupOn and Living Social and the many other "daily deal" coupon sites. Cheaper BOOZE! They are saying that it's a violation to include alcohol within these deals and discounts. So that awesome groupon you saw the other day: $20 for $40 at Bar Louis can only be used for their crappy tasting food. Sigh. Why bother then.
